Discover the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

178 150x150 Discover the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

“Xperia arc S is the fastest and most entertaining Xperia to date. It clearly demonstrates the premier range of smartphones in the Xperia family that are embedded with features and offer a great entertainment experience.”

  • Super fast 1.4 GHz turbo processor
  • 3D sweep to bring panoramas to life
  • Latest Android platform

Xperia arc S includes best-in-class Sony technology such as 3D sweep panorama that enables images to be captured in 3D and then viewed by connecting the phone using the HDMI output to a 3D TV.  Xperia arc S has a visually brilliant 4.2” Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine, an 8.1mp camera with HD video capability and Sony’s award winning Exmor R for mobile image sensor that enhances still images and videos even in low light conditions.

Consumers also have access to a unique social entertainment experience of sharing through Facebook inside Xperia, in addition to the extensive world of Android with over 250,000

178 Discover the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc was a critically acclaimed turning point for the manufacturer’s Xperia line. Delivering a more robust UI than its predecessor, the X10, it also enjoyed one of the slickest designs we’ve seen on a smartphone, a great camera and a beautiful screen. In spite of all these qualities, Its appeal was tarnished shortly after release, with LG, Samsung and HTC all dropping their dual-core handsets onto the market. So despite no major slowdown on the device itself, in consumers’ eyes at least, 1GHz suddenly seemed slow.

So while it’s a bit early for an entirely new handset, in a tried and tested mobile industry fashion, Sony Ericsson has released a specced-up stop-gap device and thrown the letter ‘S’ in for good measure. What you get is the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, with a 1.4GHz processor as well as 2D and 3D Sweep Panorama functionality for the camera. Suffice to say this adds to the already competent spec sheet, with its 4.2″ screen (480 x 854 pixels), 512MB RAM, 8MP AF camera, not to mention Gingerbread under the hood. Needless to say, the bumped up processor results in speedier interaction, most noticeable in camera module which opens 20% faster and web browsing, which handles flash videos that little bit smoother. The 3D Sweep Panorama can be appreciated on any 3D TV that requires glasses, otherwise, the 2D panorama can be outputted via HDMI or viewed on the handset itself.

256 Discover the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Having given the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S the once over, it won’t come as a shock to anyone that this isn’t an entirely new device and won’t prompt current Xperia arc users to upgrade. That said, with smooth performance and the same fantastic styling as found on the original, only this time in white, we can see the appeal of this reprise and look forward to getting a review unit so we can give you a full run down. Those who’d want to purchase the handset though, will have to wait at least until the end of the month, which is when some retailers will start shipping it.

Sony Ericson Xperia X1

428 150x150 Sony Ericson Xperia X1A new experience

There’s a lot to fall for in Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Possibly the hottest looker of a PocketPC is also heavy on skill. Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top.

The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized. By the way, romance or not, Sony Ericsson and HTC have hit their perfect shape with that one.

The XPERIA X1 is surely the most eagerly anticipated device in the world of Windows Mobile. Getting our review out was surely quite a wait too, we know. Better late than ever, as some folks say. We’ll still have our say ’cause for the XPERIA it’s a load of high expectations to live up to

Nokia’s Sea Ray phone and Most Popular Nokia Phones

Nokia is currently in the transition phase, as it is leaving its currently smartphone operating system Symbian and will start on the new Windows Phone platform with the Sea Ray phone.

The Sea Ray smartphone, which is expected to be the first Nokia handset with Windows Phone platform, will come in 2012. The Street revealed this quoting unnamed sources.

However, CNBC said that the phone is very much on schedule and will arrive in 2011 itself.

”As we stated previously, we have increased confidence we will ship our first Windows Phone product this year,” Nokia spokesman Doug Dawson was quoted as saying by CNBC.

Nokia is currently in the transition phase as it is leaving its currently smartphone operating system Symbianand will start on the new Windows Phone platform with the Sea Ray phone.

Even about a week back, there was a tweet from Nokia which said the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone would definitely be released in 2011.

Possibly, Nokia is talking about some other phone other than Sea Ray which would become its first Windows Phone based handset.

Nokia C3-01 Silver
The Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is a slimline phone with an alphanumeric keypad plus a small touchscreen. It’s a modern twist on a classic design, and is ideal for someone who wants a simple phone with the ability to access facebook and twitter. The fast 3G HSPA connection helps, as does the Wi-Fi. The C3-01 is pretty basic in other respects, but has a decent music player with FM radio and headphone socket, plus a 5 megapixel camera. Available in Silver and Grey.
Nokia C3 Black / Nokia C3 Gold / Nokia C3 Pink
The Nokia C3 is a cut-price BlackBerry lookalike, and that’s no bad thing! It offers a full QWERTY keyboard, mobile e-mail, a basic camera and a media player, plus Wi-Fi, Facebook and Twitter and excellent battery life. Watch out for freezing and crashing, and be aware that the Wi-Fi isn’t the most reliable. Available in Black, Blue, Gold or Pink.
Nokia N8 Black / Nokia N8 Pink / Nokia N8 Silver
The Nokia N8 is the best Nokia we’ve seen yet, with the latest Symbian^3 smartphone operating system and an amazing 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash and HD video recording. With a responsive touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom capability, GPS with free navigation software and maps, 16GB of onboard memory and great battery life, it’s a strong all-rounder. However, even the revamped Symbian^3 lags a long way behind Apple or Android.
Nokia 5230 Black / Nokia 5230 Pink / Nokia 5230 Purple / Nokia 5230 White
The 5230 is an entry-level touchscreen smartphone. Its key features are its large touchscreen, A-GPS with Ovi Maps, 3G, downloadable apps from the Ovi store and outstanding battery life. On the other hand it has a poor camera, a mono speaker, no WiFi and no video calling. But for £50 on PAYG it’s a bargain!

Nokia C1-01
The C1-01 is Nokia’s entry-level offering, and is very much an old-style phone. If you want an old-fashioned mobile that makes calls, sends texts, plays music via MP3 or FM radio and has great battery life, you’ll find it here. You won’t find anything more than that, but it is very cheap.
Nokia 6303i Classic Silver
The 6303i Classic is an easy-to-use budget handset with an attractive stainless steel finish and good features – a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, MP3 player, FM radio, 3.5mm audio jack, Nokia Maps, Bluetooth, 2GB memory card and good battery life. Available in Silver.
Nokia E5 Black / Nokia E5 White
The Nokia E5 is a business phone with smart looks, an excellent QWERTY keyboard, full email support, fast internet access, plus the usual smartphone features such as A-GPS, Wi-Fi, and plenty of memory. But watch out for freezing, switching off and loss of signal.
Nokia C2-01
The C2-01 is a minimum-spec phone that does little more than the basics.

Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type
The Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is a new style of phone with both a touchscreen and an alphanumeric keypad. Although it’s a resistive touchscreen and quite small (for a touchscreen), it’s certainly a lot better than not having one, and we think that it’s a real asset. The X3-02 is incredibly lightweight and thin too, and will slide into the smallest pocket with ease. Yet it manages to pack in a fully featured music player and radio, lightning fast internet access and Wi-Fi. The camera’s average and we’d have liked more memory, but overall the X3-02 gives you a lot for your money.
Nokia E6
The Nokia E6 is a high-end smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen user interface, running Symbian Anna. With rock-solid build quality and many strong features, the E6 is more than a match for the likes of BlackBerry. But the impending demise of Symbian is a black mark against the phone.
Nokia C5-03
The C5-03 is another uninspired Nokia smartphone running the old Symbian operating system. With its unresponsive resistive touchscreen, poor camera with fixed focus, no flash, and lack of adequate memory, it serves as a sad example of everything that’s gone wrong with Nokia. Available in Graphite and Green.
Nokia X7
The Nokia X7 is an expensive smartphone, but it offers poor value for money. Running the Symbian Anna operating system, which isn’t our favourite and is destined to be dumped by Nokia, the X7 suffers from a low screen resolution, slow processor, inadequate memory, a mediocre camera and an average battery. It looks and feels premium, but it just doesn’t deliver.

Nokia C7
The Nokia C7 runs the latest Symbian^3 smartphone operating system and offers a lot for your money. Star features include a responsive touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom capability, HD video recording, GPS with free navigation software and maps, 8GB of onboard memory and great battery life. Available in silver, black and brown.
Nokia C6-01
The Nokia C6-01 is a mid-range Symbian^3 smartphone with a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen. The device is compact but heavy, and feels solid in the hand. The camera can capture still shots at 8 megapixels and video in HD. Wi-Fi and HSDPA give fast internet access. Available in Black or Silver.
Nokia E7
The Nokia E7 is a powerful smartphone with a large 4 inch screen and a full-sized QWERTY keyboard, making it a good choice for email and texting. There are good features here including an 8 megapixel camera with HD video, a high quality media player, fast internet and 16GB memory. But it’s a very large and heavy phone, with questionable battery life and dubious reliability and user-friendliness, thank to its Symbian operating system.
Nokia X3
The Nokia X3 is an inexpensive slide-design music phone. It has a good music player, FM radio, memory card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers. It also comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera and has good battery life, but is let down by a poor quality keypad.

nokiac2 02 Nokias Sea Ray phone and Most Popular Nokia Phones
Nokia C2-02
The C2-02 is a touch-and-type phone with a slide out keypad and a touchscreen. Combining the best of both worlds is a good concept, but the implementation is poor, with a small resistive screen making the user interface hard work. There are some good features, such as facebook & twitter apps, Nokia Maps, a music player and FM radio. But the phone is dual band only, so accessing the internet is very slow. The camera is poor, there’s no GPS and the onboard memory is pitiful.

Nokia – Coming Soon

Nokia 100

Nokia’s most affordable phone ever, the Nokia 100 is pitched to sell at just €20 before tax and subsidy.

As you might expect, you don’t get a huge amount of features for this price.. in fact it’s amazing that anyone can make a mobile phone at all for this sort of money. But the Nokia 100 isn’t as basic as you might think – it comes with a 1.8″ 128 x 160 pixel TFT display, an FM radio with a headset included in the box and an integrated flashlight.

The operating system is Nokia’s ultra-basic Series 30, but it has recently had a makeover so it looks much more modern. The Nokia 100 has 32 built in polyphonic ringtones, a calendar and alarm clock, up to 500 phone book entries and a cost tracking application.

There’s no data of any sort on the 100, this is a dual-band GSM 900/1800 or 850/1800 device only, and there’s no camera or Bluetooth either, but what do you expect for €20? It weighs just 70 grams and measures 110 x 46 x 15mm and the 850 mAh battery provides up to 7 hours talktime and 35 days standby time.

The inclusion of Nokia Life Tools indicates that this is a device aimed at emerging markets, although cheap Nokias always sell well even in richer countries.

A variety of colours are available (depending on market) including various shades of blue, pink, red and black. Nokia say that the 100 should be available during Q4 2011.

Although this is incredibly cheap, it’s worth noting that for just €5 more you can have the much more capable Nokia 101

Nokia 101

A slightly more expensive and much more capable version of the Nokia 100, the Nokia 101 should cost just €25 before tax and subsidy. You wouldn’t expect a lot for that sort of money, but the Nokia 101 packs a surprising amount in.

Although it looks almost identical to the 100 with a basic 1.8″ 128 x 160 pixel TFT colour display on the front and no camera on the back, the 101 is actually a dual-SIM phone with an MP3 player, FM radio and a microSD slot. A stereo wired headset in included in the box, although you will need to supply your own microSD card.

The Nokia 101 has an integrated flashlight, it can store up to 500 phonebook entries in 5 SIM card profiles, it comes with a time and pre-paid tracker. There are some preloaded games, and the 101′s simple Series 30 interface has been given a makeover to match Nokia’s more expensive phones.

There’s no data connectivity, camera or Bluetooth, but then you weren’t really expecting that for this money, were you? What you get is dual-band 900 / 1800 GSM with both SIM cards active at once.

In India, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal the Nokia 101 will ship with a large 1020 mAh battery which gives up to 32 days standby time, 8.5 hours talktime and 33 hours of music playback. For some reason the rest of the world gets a smaller 850 mAh battery which still provides a very respectable 25 days standby, 6.7 hours talktime and 26 hours music playback. The Nokia 101 weighs a shade under 70 grams and measures 110 x 46 x 15mm.

There are only two colours available, Coral Red and Phantom Black. Nokia say that the 101 should start shipping during Q3 2011.

Nokia 500

A landmark device in two ways, the Nokia 500 is Nokia’s first 1GHz Symbian phone, and it is also the first handset to ditch Nokia’s hopelessly awful naming system to come up with something a little more flexible.

Before we look at the phone, let’s look at the name. No longer will we be baffled by having completely different phones with the same name, such as the C3 messaging phone and the C3 Touch and Type. The number on future Nokia handsets will indicate just where they are in the range, from 100 to 999, so the Nokia 500 sits pretty much slap bang in the middle of Nokia’s line-up, priced at €150 before tax and subsidy.

The Nokia 500 follows a pretty familiar pattern when it comes to the hardware. There’s a 3.2″ 360 x 640 pixel display, a 5 megapixel camera on the back and 3.5G and WiFi, GPS and an FM radio plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

The operating system is the latest version of Symbian called “Anna”, which includes free navigation and mapping software, a comprehensive multimedia player and all the usual applications you would expect to find on a smartphone.

Under the hood, the Nokia 500 sports a 1GHz CPU, which is very fast for a device in this price range. Combine this with the fact that Symbian is a very efficient operating system when it comes to resources, and it is quite likely that the Nokia 500 will be a little speed demon when it comes to gaming, multimedia and web surfing.

Compared to high-end smartphones, the screen size is pretty modest. The camera is a bit poor when it comes to making video clips, with 15 fps VGA resolution capture. But compared with similarly priced Android devices, the Nokia 500 actually looks pretty good, especially with the pin-sharp display and speedy processor. What the Nokia 500 lacks is Android’s application library, but even so there are plenty of applications available.

There are two colours of Nokia 500 coming - black and white, but there are a variety of large, colourful battery covers available including two covers in the box. Available colours at launch include black, orange, khaki, purple, coral red and azure blue with green, pink and dark silver available later.

This is quite lightweight for a smartphone, coming in at 93 grams and measuring 111 x 54 x 14mm. Nokia say that the 500 should get up to 5 hours talktime and 18 days standby time from its 1110 mAh battery.

Nokia anticipate that the 500 should be available during Q3 2011. It certainly looks appealing compared to rivals at about the same price, but will it be able to give Nokia a much-needed boost in the run-up to Christmas?

Nokia 600

The Nokia 600 is a touchscreen smartphone with an unusual selling feature – its loudness. With a loudspeaker rated at 106 phon (like the X1-00), you can use the Nokia 600 as your own portable disco.. well, sort of.

Not only can you play back through the very loud loudspeaker, but the Nokia 600 also has an FM transmitter which allows you to play back through a nearby radio, which can be very handy in the car if you have a nearby stereo. Of course, you can also use a standard 3.5mm set of headphones or stereo Bluetooth too.

Music aside, the 600 is a fairly compact smartphone with a 3.2″ 360 x 640 pixel display, a 5 megapixel camera plus LED flash on the back with 720p HD video capture. Also included are GPS and a digital compass, an FM radio, media player, microSD slot, 3.5G support, WiFi and built-in support for NFC contactless technology (including a pre-installed NFC game).

Inside is a speedy 1GHz processor, which should be impressively quick when combined with the usually efficient Symbian operating system. The OS is the very latest version, Symbian Belle, which is much improved over older releases. Importantly, the Nokia 600 ships with a preinstalled version of Angry Birds which should keep bird flinging fans happy.

The Nokia 600 measures 111 x 53 x 13mm and weighs 100 grams. Talktime is quoted as up to 6.5 hours on 3G with up to 22 days standby time. Available colours are pink, lime, white and black and the standard sales package includes a 2GB microSD card, stereo wired headset and a USB cable.

It isn’t a very expensive device either, Nokia say that the 600 should sell for about €180 before tax and carrier subsidy and it should start shipping during Q3 2011.

Nokia 700

Nokia claim that the Nokia 700 is the smallest smartphone in the world, but despite its compact size the 700 seems to be a pretty powerful device when it comes to specifications.

We can’t be sure if Nokia’s claims about it being the smallest is true, but in terms of volume the 110 x 50.7 x 9.7mm device is certainly very small. Yes, something like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini has a smaller area when viewed from the front and it is certainly lighter, but the X10 Mini is almost twice as thick as the Nokia at 17mm, and we guess that overall volume is how Nokia are measuring it.

The specification of the 700 is pretty similar to the new Nokia 600, with a 3.2″ 360 x 640 pixel touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p HD video capture plus GPS, Bluetooth, microSD expandable memory, an FM radio, multimedia player and a 3.5mm audio socket. The Nokia 700 supports 3.5G connectivity and WiFi plus it has NFC contactless technology built in, something that is likely to be a big growth area over the next few years

Although the display might seem to be on the smallish side compared with high-end Android devices, the 700 does use a ClearBlack AMOLED panel with Gorilla Glass on top which should ensure that it looks very sharp and vibrant.

The operating system is the new Symbian Belle platform which is more friendly and customisable than earlier versions of Symbian. The Nokia 700 has a 1GHz processor as well, so the whole set up should feel very quick.

It’s quite a nice looking device, and it’s certainly a good alternative to other “mini” smartphones that tend to have smaller screens. Symbian might not have the massive application library of Android rivals, but for most users the capabilities of the OS will be more than enough.

Nokia say that the 700 should be available during Q3 2011 in several colours for a price of €270 before tax and subsidy.

nokia 700 1 Nokia Coming Soon

Nokia 701

The Nokia 701 is an upgraded version of the Nokia C7, shipping with an updated operating system, an improved display and a faster processor.

It’s a powerful device with a 1GHz processor inside, roughly twice as fast as before. The display is a 3.5″ 360 x 640 pixel panel which is a little on the small side compared to rivals, but Nokia claim that it is the brightest smartphone display in the world, combining ClearBlack technology with an IPS TFT display and a Gorilla Glass coating.

On the back is an 8 megapixel camera with HD video capture and an LED flash, there is a secondary camera on the front for video calling, and as you would expect with a device of this class there is GPS, Bluetooth, 3.5G support and WiFi connectivity, and there is also built in support for NFC contactless connections.

It’s a capable media device as well, the Nokia 701 packs a media player, FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, a 3.5mm audio socket and a generous 8GB of internal flash memory plus a microSD slot.

This is a Symbian Belle smartphone, which comes with a much improved user interface and new applications. If you have the older Nokia C7 then there should be an upgrade path available a little later in the year.

Inside is a relatively large 1300 mAh battery which can provide over 6 hours talktime and nearly 23 days standby time on 3G, and the whole package measures 117 x 57 x 11mm and weighs 131 grams.

Nokia say that the 701 should start shipping during Q3 2011 in steel dark, silver light, amethyst violet, and white colour schemes for around €290 before tax and carrier subsidy, which is cheaper than the C7 when it came out and it looks pretty competitive in the midrange smartphone market.

Nokia N9: first look

Nokia’s first MeeGo handset, the Nokia N9 is also probably Nokia’s last MeeGo handsret. A powerful and beautiful device to look at, the N9 took so long to develop that Nokia shifted strategies in the meantime, leaving the MeeGo-powered N9 dangling as Nokia switched to Windows.

This is the most powerful handset ever produced by Nokia. At its heart is a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, on the front is a subtly curved 3.9″ 854 x 480 pixel AMOLED display, and on the back is an 8 megapixel camera. Unlike some preproduction MeeGo devices, the N9 lacks a physical keyboard. In fact, the specifications are very similar to a high-end Android devicen and it’s probably only a matter of time until someone ports Android to the N9.

The operating system is MeeGo 1.2 “Harmattan”, derived in part from Nokia’s Maemo platform that we last saw in the N900 almost two years ago. A huge amount of work has gone into the new interface, and although it is very new it shares the Qt development platform with Nokia’s S60 devices, so application development should be easier. The catch? Well, S60 is also

From what we have seen, the user interface looks great. MeeGo’s developers have added a lot of swipe controls to it, and cosmetically at least it looks very fresh. The display has been designed for swipe usage, the slightly curved surface and deep black laminated screen looks brilliant in this respect.

Bundled with the N9 is free turn-by-turn navigation plus an enhanced web browser and all the other features that you would expect to find in a modern smartphone. The application library is basically starting from zero through, so don’t expect to see the choice that you have with Android or the iPhone.

The 8 megapixel camera isn’t quite up to the one found in the Nokia N8, but Nokia are generally pretty good with cameras and the 720p video capture should appeal to people wanting to upload to YouTube. We don’t know if the N9 has a YouTube client though, but it’s going to be a while before it hits the market so it is certainly possible.

Underneath, the N9 is a pentaband 3G device with quad-band GSM supporting download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps on HSDPA, making this very much a true world phone. WiFi connectivity is also good with support for 802.11 a, b, g and n bands. There’s 1GB of RAM plus 16GB or 64GB of non-expandable storage, and a there’s a large 1450 mAh battery that Nokia says will give the N9 7 hours talktime and 18 days standby time, although how efficient MeeGo is in practice remains to be seen.

We don’t know exactly when the N9 will be available, Nokia say vaguely that it will be sometime later this year. There’s also no guidance on price, but we expect the N9 will be expensive. It’s worth bearing in mind that although the N9 is a powerful handset, it’s only a single core device and competitors are pushing ahead with even higher resolution screens than this. By the time it hits the market, rivals will be even more powerful and Nokia’s expected launch of Windows powered smartphones may well seriously impact market acceptance.

The N9 does look great though, it is just such a shame that we have had to wait so long.

Cool cellphone Concept – Cellphone to the Future

Nokia’s aeon “full surface screen” cellphone concept

Nokia’s research and development team have kicked it up a gear with an attractive “aeon” concept phone showing up in the R&D section of the company’s website. The most prominent design feature of aeon is a touchscreen that stretches over the full surface area of the phone, similar to BenQ-Siemens’s Black box concept phone we saw recently. Currently mobile technology isn’t quite up to realizing this fantasy, but we’ll sleep better tonight knowing that at least one of the cellphone industry’s biggest names shares the same dream as we do — BenQ’s dream didn’t count, unfortunately.

170 Cool cellphone Concept Cellphone to the Future
Nokia Aeon is designed by Mac Funamizu. Since it’s just a concept phone we don’t have any features available. And there’s no price either. All we know it would look and feel like a nano and it would have a nondescript tactile feedback technology with the surface adapting to various actions. That’s a phone right here I’d buy in a heartbeat. But I’ll have to wait for that…

The BenQ-Siemens Black Box concept phone that never was

You know, it’s too bad that BenQ-Siemens’ European operations had to go under before it managed to get this slick handset out the door. From what we can make out based on these photos spotted on a Czech website, BenQ-Siemens had developed a “Black Box concept phone,” which took home some Chinese design award earlier this year. The idea apparently is to turn the phone into one large screen, and change function depending on whatever application you need at the time: a calculator, an FM radio, the phone itself (duh), and something that looks like a game involving a goldfish and possibly a bathtub drain (we’re not really sure). You know, this reminds us a lot of that possible iPhone patent we spotted earlier this month — hopefully Apple can pick up where BenQ-Siemens left off?
